Police make numerous arrests in Wandellaan and CBD
36 illegal immigrants were arrested in the Wandellaan this past Saturday and Sunday during a police operation.
A police operation took place in Wandellaan (Walter Sisulu Street) this past weekend, from Friday, April 24 to Sunday, April 26, addressing various crimes.
This followed community concerns regarding high levels of crime in the area and formed part of Operation Shanela 2, under the leadership of Acting North West Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo.

On Friday, 29 illegal immigrants were arrested, while various liquor outlets were inspected to verify compliance. Stop-and-search operations were also conducted at the taxi rank in the CBD for drugs and unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
On Saturday and Sunday, a further 36 illegal immigrants were arrested. According to North West police spokesperson, Sgt Kelebogile Morake, two Nigerian males were taken in for enquiry by the Department of Home Affairs to verify their status.

The North West Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, Potchefstroom Public Order Policing (POP), and Provincial Communications also took part in the operation.
Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo commended the community for providing valuable information that contributed to the success of the operation. Furthermore, he expressed appreciation for the courage and cooperation of community members who continue to work closely with the police. He emphasised that crime can only be effectively addressed when communities and law enforcement stand united.
“Operations such as Shanela will continue to ensure that those involved in criminal activities are brought to book and to restore a sense of safety in our communities,” said Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo.
