Witrand Hospital responds to Deputy Director appointment allegations

The Potchefstroom Herald published an article on 26 March 2026 under the heading “NEHAWU ramps up pressure over alleged disputed appointment at Witrand Hospital” regarding allegations from the NEHAWU Witrand Branch concerning the appointment of the Deputy Director: Corporate Services.
Witrand Specialised Hospital has this week given an official statement regarding the appointment process as well as further feedback on allegations and references to Public Service Commission recommendations.

Witrand Specialized Hospital acknowledges the recent publication regarding allegations by NEHAWU Witrand Branch concerning the appointment of the Deputy Director: Corporate Services.
- Appointment Process
The position of Deputy Director: Corporate Services was advertised by Witrand Specialized Hospital in 2022. Shortlisting and interviews were conducted in November 2022 in accordance with Public Service regulations.
Thirty-seven candidates were interviewed through the prescribed process. The current incumbent was shortlisted as she met all academic and experience requirements for the post.
She emerged as the highest scoring candidate and received an offer of appointment approved by the Head of Department on 16 April 2023.The Deputy Director: Corporate Services assumed duties on 1 May 2023 and continues to serve in that capacity to date. - On Allegations and “PSC Recommendations”
The institution is aware of references to Public Service Commission recommendations circulating in the media.
However, the contents of such documents have not been formally communicated to the institutional management team. As such, Witrand Specialized Hospital is not in a position to comment on matters not within its knowledge.
Any matters relating to PSC recommendations falls under the mandate of the North West Department of Health Head Office, which is the appropriate authority. The matter was still pending and confidential between the NW Health Authority and PSC, and not to be shared with the third party. This implies that who so, ever shared the information with media violated confidentiality and potentially the Public Service Act and PAIA. - Position of the Institution
Witrand Specialized Hospital views the ongoing public allegations as harassment and an attempt to tarnish the reputation of a duly appointed official. The appointment was made through a lawful, competitive process and approved at departmental level.
The institution requests that NEHAWU Witrand Branch cease the public harassment and direct any grievances regarding appointments to the Head of Department, who is the appointing authority. Witrand Specialized Hospital remains committed to transparency, due process, and protecting the dignity of its employees.
