VIDEO: NEHAWU tightens grip on Health Department over Witrand appointment dispute
The dispute over an alleged irregular appointment at Witrand Hospital is escalating, with the NEHAWU Witrand Branch intensifying pressure on the Department of Health following a high-level meeting.
The NEHAWU Witrand Branch has intensified its stance against the Department of Health following a high-level meeting at Witrand Hospital regarding the alleged irregular appointment of a Deputy Director of Corporate Services.
The meeting, held on March 20, brought together a delegation from the Provincial Office, acting under the direction of the Superintendent General and the MEC for Health, and the NEHAWU Witrand Branch Executive Committee.
The engagement aimed to address concerns that have been simmering for some time around the appointment process. According to the union, the department has requested three days to consult with its principals before providing a formal response. Despite this, NEHAWU has made it clear that it will not ease its pressure on the matter.
“Enough is enough with the delaying tactics played by the department,” said James Makhaza, speaking on behalf of the branch. “We are demanding the implementation of the Public Service Commission’s recommendations, and we will not back down until justice is served.”
The NEHAWU Witrand Branch Executive Committee reiterated its firm position during the meeting, stating that it remains committed to seeing the matter through to its conclusion. The committee also emphasised that it would not be intimidated or silenced by any threats.
“We have given the department the three days they requested, but we expect a clear and decisive response within that timeframe,” James added. “Our members deserve transparency, fairness, and accountability.”
In a strongly worded announcement, NEHAWU further called for the removal of the candidate at the centre of the dispute, insisting that the recommendations of the Public Service Commission must be implemented without delay.
The department is expected to revert with feedback once consultations have been concluded. The Potchefstroom Herald also sent an enquiry for comment to Witrand Hospital last week but did not receive feedback at the time of going to print.
