Stormwater drain collapse forces temporary closure of key Potchefstroom intersection
Municipal spokesperson, Jeanette Tshite, said an investigation by the municipality's Roads and Stormwater Team confirmed that immediate intervention was required.
A section of Walter Sisulu Street in Potchefstroom has been temporarily closed after a stormwater drain collapsed at the entrance from Dr Nelson Mandela Drive (N12), prompting urgent repair work by the JB Marks Local Municipality.
The municipality announced that the closure was implemented to allow its Roads and Stormwater Team access to the affected area while repairs are carried out.
Municipal spokesperson, Jeanette Tshite, said an investigation by the municipality’s Roads and Stormwater Team confirmed that immediate intervention was required.
“Following an investigation conducted by the Municipality’s Roads and Stormwater Team, it was established that urgent repairs are required to address the damaged stormwater infrastructure and ensure the continued safety of road users,” Tshite said.
According to the municipality, the closure affects the entrance to Walter Sisulu Street (formerly Church Street) from Dr Nelson Mandela Drive and will remain in place while repair work is underway.
Tshite said the temporary closure would allow municipal teams unhindered access to the site to complete the necessary repairs safely and efficiently.
The Roads and Stormwater Team have indicated that the work is expected to be completed by Wednesday, June 10, weather and site conditions permitting.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes via Sol Plaatjie Avenue and New Market Street and to exercise caution when travelling near the affected area.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate the public’s cooperation and patience while necessary repairs are being undertaken,” said Tshite.
The municipality said further updates will be communicated should there be any changes to the repair schedule.
