Potch CBD transforms into a strangely quiet place

The CBD was quiet this morning with numerous businesses closed due to the national June 30 protests.

Motorists living in town would have noticed the lack of traffic on their way to work this morning (Tuesday, June 30).

This is mostly due to the June 30 protests against illegal immigrants, with a large section of businisses in the CBD being closed since yesterday afternoon.

The Potchefstroom Herald drove through the CBD this morning at 07:20 to find an almost empty taxi rank, which normally would have been abuzz with activity.

Numerous businesses in Sol Plaatjie and New Market Streets were also closed, giving a different feeling to an average morning in Potchefstroom’s city centre. Police and security officials are also patrolling the area to ensure the safety of the public.

The Herald will continue to update the community throughout the day on any protests in the Potchefstroom, Ikageng, Promosa and Mohadin areas.
