Police nab three suspects for cattle theft

The owner reported the theft of 25 heads of cattle. The arrest was made on the same day after swift response and coordinated effort from the SAPS.

Three suspects have been arrested for stock theft and possession of suspected stolen livestock after a theft of 25 cattle was reported.

According to NW police spokesperson, Capt. Majang Skalkie, the three suspects, Santo Ponya (47), Moeti Peter Mosia (43), and Samuel Nhlapo (34), were arrested along the N12 Road near Potchefstroom.

“The suspects were found in possession of 16 head of cattle, which were positively identified by the lawful owner as part of the stolen livestock,” stated Skalkie.

The owner of the cattle reported the theft on Friday, June 27. The arrest was made on the same day after swift response and coordinated effort from the SAPS.

A multidisciplinary operation comprising members of the Potchefstroom Public Order Police (POP), Potchefstroom Flying Squad, Potchefstroom Crime Intelligence, Potchefstroom Stock Theft Unit, together with local farmers, was immediately activated.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, applauded members for their quick action and swift response.

The trio appeared before the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 29 June 2026, on charges of stock theft and possession of suspected stolen livestock. They were remanded in custody until their next court appearance on Monday, 6 July 2026 for bail application.
