Library closed next week due to health and safety concerns

The current condition of the carpets have become an Occupational Health and Safety concern for both employees and library users.

The current condition of the carpets in the Potchefstroom Main Library has necessitated the JB Marks Local Municipality to temporarily close the Library and Museum Art Gallery from July 20-24.

According to JB Marks Municipal spokesperson, Jeanette Tshite, the carpets have been adversely affected by ongoing roof leaks at the Potchefstroom Main Library.

“Their current condition has become an Occupational Health and Safety concern for both employees and library users. The five working-day closure is therefore necessary to ensure that the carpets are cleaned effectively and that the health and safety of all occupants are protected.”

Tshite also added that the use of specialised cleaning chemicals and drying time lead to the need to close the facilities for five working days.

“No staff members or members of the public will be permitted access until the carpets have dried completely and the facilities have been declared safe for occupation.”

Normal library services will resume, and the Potchefstroom Main Library and the Museum Art Gallery will reopen to the public on Saturday, July 25.
