Hope begins with one step: Inside Potchefstroom’s anonymous support group for addiction

Sometimes, hope starts simply by walking through the right door on a Monday evening.

Every Monday evening, while many people carry on with their weekly routines, a group of strangers gathers quietly at Every Nation Church in Potchefstroom. They come from different walks of life, carrying different stories and battling different addictions. What unites them is a shared goal: finding hope, healing and a life beyond addiction.

Hope Again Wellness Assist, an anonymous support group that has been meeting since August 2024, opens its doors every Monday at 18:00 to anyone struggling with addiction. Whether the battle is with alcohol, hard drugs or another form of addiction, everyone is welcome without judgement. The group is facilitated by four to five counsellors and social workers who rotate each week. What makes the support especially powerful is that every facilitator has walked the road of addiction themselves, allowing them to speak from experience rather than theory.

As a journalist, I attended a few of the meetings to better understand what the group offers. What I found was not a room filled with shame or condemnation, but one filled with honesty, compassion and hope. Each week follows a specific discussion topic, while also giving members the opportunity to share their own journeys, struggles and victories. Those who have recovered from addiction often return simply to encourage others, proving that recovery is possible and that no one has to face the journey alone.

One of the most striking aspects was the overwhelming sense of acceptance. There were no labels, no judgement and no pressure. Instead, there was understanding, practical advice and genuine encouragement. In a community where addiction is often hidden behind closed doors and support can be difficult to find, Hope Again Wellness Assist offers something many people desperately need, a safe place to be heard.

Addiction affects far more people than many realise, yet it remains one of the least talked about challenges in many communities. Groups such as Hope Again Wellness Assist remind us that recovery begins with a single courageous step. For anyone wondering whether they might need help, attending just one meeting could be the beginning of a new chapter. Sometimes, hope starts simply by walking through the right door on a Monday evening.
