Power outages due to vandalism

Electricians have been working on an off at various stages to restore power.

Residents have had to contend with power cuts this past week in Smit, Rivier and Sol Plaatjie streets due to vandalism, as well as other environmental factors.

This past week, the power tripped on Wednesday, 12 August, affecting Suiddorp, areas around Potchefstroom Hospital, a section of Miederpark and the industrial area. This was due to repairs that had to be completed at the Alpha 88/11kV substation.

The mini-substation in Scheepers Street was also vandalised on Thursday evening (13 August), resulting in residents once again being without power.

Trees coming into contact with power lines also contributed to the power cuts, with municipal workers needing to cut back long branches.

According to the latest information shared by DA Ward 5 councillor Heinricha Hodgson, the Scheepers Street substation is running again, while repairs are underway in Smit and Sol Plaatjie streets.

The JB Marks Municipality have not yet responded to the Herald’s enquiry.
