The NWU Symphony Orchestra once again showed its versatility and musical talent during an epic “Beyond the Horizon” concert held at the NG Miederpark Church on Saturday, August 15.

The Symphony Orchestra wowed the audience with a selection of musical items focusing on famous film soundtracks ranging from Mulan, Forrest Gump and Titanic to the iconic television series Band of Brothers and the worldwide phenomenon Game of Thrones, which was a brilliant way to conclude the performance.

Under the leadership of conductor Dr André Oosthuizen, the Symphony Orchestra took listeners on a musical journey, with dynamics, melody and impeccable timing transporting them into various worlds.

Oosthuizen’s conducting is as passionate as can be as he guides his orchestra to perform with excellence and do justice to the composers of these majestic musical pieces.

The NWU Symphony Orchestra opened with Pietro Mascagni’s Intermezzo – Cavalleria Rusticana, with the string instruments taking centre stage.

Next up was the well-known Titanic Suite by James Horner, with soloist and soprano Thembinkosi Magagula delivering a goosebump-raising performance.

Ballet Music from Faust by Charles Gounod took listeners on a journey of tempo changes, with music depicting how Faust makes a deal with Méphistophélès in exchange for youth and worldly pleasures. This includes a romantic encounter with a young girl called Marguerite. The tempo speeds up to a rousing conclusion where Faust meets his end.

“Beyond the Horizon” was another illustration of how music can touch the senses and make you feel emotion on different levels. The skill and unity of the NWU Symphony Orchestra is something to behold, with the various musicians performing their instruments with pure class and elegance.

The next NWU Symphony Orchestra show will take place on October 4 at Aardklop, where they will present Jubilate Deo at the Sanlam Auditorium at 15:00.
