A 42-year-old Nigerian national has appeared in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court after allegedly attempting to bribe Hawks investigators with R10 000 to make a drug possession case against him disappear.

Augustine Chinedu Onah was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit in Klerksdorp on Friday, September 25, following an undercover operation.

According to the Hawks, Onah allegedly contacted investigators and offered R10 000 as gratification in exchange for the withdrawal and closure of a case involving the alleged possession of drugs.

The Hawks then conducted an undercover operation, during which Onah allegedly met with members of the Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit and offered them R3 000.

He allegedly told the members that he would pay the remaining amount at a later stage.

Onah was subsequently arrested and charged with corruption.

He appeared in court on Monday, September 28, where the matter was postponed to October 5 for a formal bail application.

Warrant Officer Nkosinathi Ndlovu confirmed the arrest and said the investigation is continuing.
