“The Voice of Hind Rajab”-film gives thought-provoking perspective during Palestine Week in Potch

The human cost of war was put sharply into focus on Saturday, October 10, when the academy award nominated film The Voice of Hind Rajab on the North-West University (NWU) Potchefstroom campus as part of Palestine Week.
Potch for Palestine, the MSA (Muslim Students’ Association) at the NWU, and Social Intifada hosted the event, drawing several local community members. The film centers on Hind Rajab, a six-year-old Palestinian girl trapped in a car under fire in Gaza who pleads desperately for rescue. Emergency workers at the Red Crescent Society attempt to coordinate an ambulance for her during an intense couple of hours.

The narrative highlights the immense emotional toll and bureaucratic delays the operators face during this real-life event that happened in 2024. During the gathering, the founder of Social Intifada, Khalid Vawda, urged attendees to look beyond religion and view the conflict through a Palestinian perspective, acknowledging the oppression the population experiences.

Ultimately, the screening offered a powerful platform for reflection, dialogue, and a deeper understanding of the individuals behind the headlines. There was also a kite-flying display in Mohadin as well as a well-curator exhibition on campus during the day that highlighted the Palestine cause.
