Potch tourism: Old Fort and Cemetery

Visiting the Old Fort and Cemetery in Potchefstroom.

Situated west of the Potch-Klerksdorp railway line and south of the Potch-Klerksdorp main road, the Old British fort and cemetery make up the largest and best-preserved fort of its period.
The fort was built by British soldiers during the Anglo-Boer War in 1887.
Major Clark started digging the fort in 1881 and it was completed by Colonel RW Wilson.
According to data compiled by Mr Tiger Thekiso and Ms Miems Lamprecht, British troops were besieged in the fort by the Boers for 95 days and a number of soldiers and civilians who died during the siege are buried in the adjoining cemetery. One of the well-known families that also resided in the fort was that of Mr Ulrich Forssman.
Although it may not look like much more than a wall, if you take a closer look, you can see a site where history took place. The Old fort and cemetery are locked, but visitors can see what’s inside through the gate. The fort is situated next to the licensing office in Potchefstroom.
