HTS Potchefstroom is fast becoming the football hub of the town after an outstanding season in the Kay Motsepe Cup and various other high profile tournaments.

“We started off shakily when we played Boitshoko High in a contest which saw us beat them on penalties after a 1-all draw.

They were given a controversial penalty in the later stages. We then played in the semi’s against Promosa which ended 3-all after 90 minutes.” According to Diphoko, the team’s goalkeeper, Olebogeng Mayeng, made a number of great saves in the ensuing penalty shootout to see his team through to the district playoffs. “We then had to play against a school from Ventersdorp to see who would proceed as the Tlokwe Champs,” he continued. The team lost in the final on penalties after a gutsy display and ended as runners-up.

“At the district playoffs, we started off against Tshedimosetso Secondary School (Klerksdorp) which has always been our rival and they defeated us 3-2.  We then played a school from Wolmaranstad and won that match 1-0.

Then Tshedimosetso drew with the Wolmaranstad school, which saw them progress to the provincial playoffs. That ended our journey,” he added.

The younger generation also did their school proud in the Copa Coca-Cola u.15 tournament.“We played many matches against the schools in Ikageng and were crowned the champs.

We went on to play the schools from Ventersdorp and we defeated them to qualify for the district playoffs,” stated Diphoko. “We then lost on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the semi’s and the journey ended there for the lads.”

Amid the success, there were also a sad goodbye for the coach, Thabang Leburu. Two new coaches, Mac Mngomezulu and Gift Dipale will join HTS.
