In a thriller final match of the season, Jomo Cosmos was relegated after going down 3-1 to Maritzburg United.

Ezenkosi looked to be on course for a result that would secure their top-flight status when a superb goal from Linda Mntambo put them ahead in the first half. Yet, late strikes from the team of choice’s Mohau Mokate and Evans Rusike saw the visitors secure safety.
Cosmos’ loss, combined with the University of Pretoria’s victory over Golden Arrows, saw Jomo Sono’s side drop to the last place on the log and suffer direct relegation. After the victory, the United faithful cried tears of joy and the fans tried to storm the field to celebrate with the team.

Sherwyn Naicker was at his post for Cosmos throughout the game, making a few brilliant saves. Cosmos looked to be in control of proceedings, although United was trying to hammer down the gate. Middendorp’s men quickly moved the ball forward, where they continually stretched out Ezenkosi’s defence.

Their determination was rewarded in the 82nd minute when Mohau Mokate put a looping header over Naicker after a goalmouth scramble to make it 1-1. Just four minutes later, Maritzburg’s comeback was completed by Evans Rusike, who arrived at the near post late to touch home a right-flank cross from Abia Nale to make it 2-1.

Rusike added another goal in the 93rd minute while Cosmos was desperately throwing men forward in an effort to equalise.
The final score was 3-1, ensuring premier league action for United next season.
