The North West University team has been growing for a number of years in the sport of canoeing and are doing exceptionally well.

Rita de Kock was one of only 5 lady boats in the race where more than 100 paddlers participated in the 22.9 km tiring and tricky river section.  She finished the race in a time of  2 hours 20 minutes.

The winners of the K2 race (Double boat) were also from NWU – Herman Marais and Leo Kerkhoff, who finished in 1 hour 31 minutes.

The Florida Lake Canoe Club hosted a race on the Klip River from Meyerton, to Three Rivers where the Klip runs into the Vaal River, as an opportunity to train for the upcoming long A grade races, and to enable beginners / novices to gain the experience required to do those races, as well as to do the qualifying races required.

The Gauteng paddlers have started the river race season and are preparing for their first A grade river race which takes place in October, in Cradock, on the Fish River covering a distance of 80km over two days.  A inter-university competition takes place annually at the river race with student teams representing UCT, Rhodes, PE and KZN compete against each other – hopefully NWU will also be able to put a team into the competition.
