The Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds will be abuzz this weekend with the best women’s football players showing their skills in the Varsity Women’s Football tournament from 15-17 September.
The three-day tournament will officially kick off on Thursday as eight teams will aim to make their mark.
NWU-Pukke will have home advantage and will look to make a good start against the University of Western Cape (UWC) on Thursday evening. UWC will be no pushover as they were the runners-up the previous year.
This match will be televised live on Supersport, adding to the grandeur of the event.
The eight teams are divided into two pools, Group A and Group B.
The Pukke are in group A with UWC, UJ and CUT, which will be a difficult but manageable group for the locals.
Group B will be the group of death with champions, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), UP-Tuks, UFS-Kovsies and UCT battling it out.
The two teams who finish in the top two of each of their groups will face off in the semi-finals.
The winners of those two matches will meet in the final.
‘The competition has gained momentum since its inception in 2013 which has seen the number of teams grow from six to eight,’ said Varsity Football manager, Xhanti-Lomzi Nesi. ‘Not only has the popularity of the three-day tournament seen good growth, this year’s edition will have three matches being televised on SuperSport.”
According to Hendrik Truter, marketer at marketing and communication at NWU Pukke, one of the great attractions will be a special seven a side football tournament, where 40 NWU-Pukke residences will compete.
“There will be a great atmosphere at this tournament and we urge the public to join in the fun during this three-day tournament,” he said.

NWU-Pukke fixtures list:
15 September, 18:30, NWU-Pukke vs. UWC
16 September, 11:30, NWU-Pukke vs. UJ
