A local MMA (mixed martial arts) athlete is ready to get the job done in Klerksdorp this Saturday.
Klerksdorp Fight Night (KFN) is ready for its 5th instalment. Five other Potchefstroom fighters will also take part on the night but, according to Tiaan Swart, the event organiser, Hein ‘The Viking Warrior’ Pavier is the main drawcard for Potch. Pavier is a veteran on the amateur MMA circuit and has achieved success at previous KFN events.
According to Swart, Pavier will be one step closer to turning pro after this fight.
‘It is great that fighters can progress to a professional level at our event,’ he said.
Pavier, who is on a 5-fight winning streak, must be the favourite for this bout. With only two amateur losses early in his amateur career, he has claimed some big scalps such as Morgan Hunter, Wesley Victor and Stevo Law. His opponent, Joachim Mouton, is a relatively unknown force at KFN but shouldn’t be underestimated. As previous events have shown, there is no such thing as an easy fight in Klerksdorp.
A surprise showcase is also on the cards for fight fans who will be attending the event Z Tiaan Swart and EFC Middleweight, Warren ‘Grizzly Bear’ Allison will be having a grappling match. ‘It’s all about showing the crowd that there is more to MMA than knocking the stuffing out of each other,’ said Swart.
MMA is about combining the beautiful science of boxing with the brutality of Muay Thai and the strategic manoeuvring of grappling. The showcase between Swart and Allison is specifically to show fight fans one of the most under-appreciated aspects of MMA.
Fighters from Vanderbijl, Carletonville, Johannesburg and Pretoria will be taking part in the event, proving that KFN, as an amateur event, has grown in leaps and bounds since its inception a year ago.
Billed as the ‘best in the west’, KFN is right up there with amateur events such as Fightstar, which is known for producing top quality professional EFC athletes. KFN 05 is also ushering in a new era for MMA in the North West province by showcasing two women’s bouts on Saturday.
The women’s MMA scene is another fast-growing aspect of the fastest growing sport in the world.
There can be no doubt that, with 20 fights on the card, there will be no shortage of entertainment for those who attend.
The atmosphere is what makes KFN so popular among fans, as every event brings together all the aspects of MMA in one night of entertainment. There truly is something for everybody at KFN. Hardened MMA fans can dissect the intricate details of every submission while those who just want to see explosive, furious action won’t be disappointed either.
Get your tickets online at Klerksdorpfightnight.co.za or at the door of the Portuguese Hall on the evening. The action begins at 17:30.
Six fights, including the special showcase between Swart and Allison, will also be streamed live on the Potchefstroom Herald Facebook page.
