MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) action is heating up this October with Klerksdorp Fight Night 6 taking centre stage at the Klerksdorp Wrestling Hall on Saturday, 7 October.

One competitor who will be looking to make a name for himself and gain gold in the process, is NWU-Pukke student, Francois ‘911’ Meyer. This 3rd-year Business Management and Entrepreneurship student is dead set on claiming the Lightweight title (66-70 kg) against Given Majuba from Mamelodi in what promises to be a classic encounter.  Meyer, fighting under Olympus-Klerksdorp, has not had much time to prepare for the fight as he was only given two-weeks’   notice.

Still, the man they call 911 will surely be going in, guns blazing, especially as he has some of the best coaches in his corner. His boxing and stand-up coach, Sean Santana is one of Potchefstroom’s most well-known fighters and, under his tutelage, Meyer can only reach greater heights.

‘I feel the preparation for the fight has gone well. Majuba is a head taller than me and he has some good kicking and striking skills, but I feel I have a better all-round game,’ he says.

Tiaan Swart has focused intensively on his Jujitsu groundwork, together with EFC’s Pro Potch fighter, Roevan de Beer assisting and mentoring Meyer as his training partner. ‘Sean has shown me how to work hard and press on even when my tank seems empty. Tiaan, on the other hand, has helped to improve my overall fighting strategy in all aspects of the sport,’ he added confidently.

*Meyer’s agent, Shaun Ward, can be contacted on 082 319 2043 for sponsorship opportunities.

* Doors open at 17:00 and entry fee is R150. Tickets at www.klerksdorpfightnight.co.za
