It is a sure bet that the Malan name will be featured in most cricketing headlines across the country this summer, especially after North West Dragons opener, Janneman Malan started his season with a brilliant 130 (145) against Gauteng in the Sunfoil 3-Day series at Wanderers in Johannesburg last weekend.
Although the match ended in a draw, the Dragons can keep their heads high with numerous positives coming out of this match. Malan’s older brother, André, also scored a solid 66 and, together, the two starred in a 171-run partnership. The Dragons captain, Kagiso Rapulana also scored a well-rounded 78. North West managed to score 410/8 declared in reply to Gauteng’s first innings total of 326/8 declared.
Gauteng’s Tshepang Dithole was unlucky in Gauteng’s first innings, falling short for 99 when he deserved a century.
The Dragons spinner, Johannes Diseko spoilt his party and was one of the stars with the ball for his side. He performed especially well in the second innings with career-best figures in first-class cricket of 5/58.
*The Dragons also claimed a 4-wicket victory over Gauteng in the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge on Sunday. Aya Myoli starred with the ball as he picked up 3/15 to restrict Gauteng to 155 all out. North West then chased the small total with Rapulana scoring 28.
