Cliffhangers seem to follow the bizhub Highveld Lions in their 2017/18 Momentum One Day Cup campaign as tensions were high once again in a pulsating 4-wicket victory against the Warriors in East London last night (Thursday, 11 January)

A brilliant record chase of saw the Lions overtake the Warriors’ score of 306/6 with 2 balls to spare. Rassie van der Dussen hit the winning runs in his superb knock of 83 (66) as the Lions batsmen showed calmness under pressure. Van der Dussen hit 5 fours and 3 sixes in his innings that took the game right out of the Warriors’ grasp.

Wian Mulder (25) and Van der Dussen put on a fifty run partnership for the seventh wicket to take the Lions home, after the two Hendricks, Reeza and Dominic hit crucial half-centuries earlier on to get the innings off to a good start.

Reeza scored 80 (74) and left-hander Dominic hit 65 (89) in a 134-run partnership for the second wicket, but their good work was undone when the Warriors’ Simon Harmer and Sthembile Langa struck for the home team.

Van der Dussen then got some good support from Mangaliso Mosehle (26), as he took charge in a superb display of consistent and well planned hitting.

Easrlier on the Warriors though that they had the game half won after posting a commanding 306/6 from their allotted overs. Yassen Vallie’s 81 and Jon-Jon Smuts’ 71 formed the backbone of the Warrior’s innings. Christiaan Jonker’s explosive unbeaten 51 (30) also ended the innings off with a bang.

Their effort though were overshadowed by Van der Dussen and company as the Lions picked up a much needed win to stake a claim for a semi-final spot.
