The North West Dragons have had a rip roaring season in coloured kit as they top the log in pool A of the CSA One Day Challenge.

Their consistent form under coach Monty Jacobs has been a pleasure for local cricket fans to witness and they surely deserve their spot in the final against rivals Gauteng this Sunday (8 April) at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. The match starts at 10:00.

Here are the 5 key players for the North West Dragons ahead of CSA One Day final against Gauteng on Sunday:

  1. Richardt Frenz

The classy right hander has been in sublime form this season for his province and is the leading run scorer in the competition with 453 runs. A brilliant average of 75.50 and a strike rate of 81.47 showcase his dependability at the crease. Four 50’s and one hundred (108) demonstrates his good form and he would definitely want to get another century in the final to steer his side to the trophy.

  1. Janneman Malan

Just as Frenz has been his consistent self with controlled and measured stroke play, Janneman Malan has been the opposite with consistent and aggressive shots typical of this high class opener. Malan is tied second for most runs in the competition with 431. Malan’s penchant for big hits is typified with him hitting the most sixes (15) in the competition. His highest score of 169 against Northern Cape in November last year is also the highest in the competition. If Malan fires then North West will have one hand on the trophy.

  1. André Malan

The middle child of the Malan cricketing triangle has also had an outstanding season, just like his younger brother Janneman (North West) and older brother Pieter (Cape Cobras). Malan greatest asset this season has been his versatility with both bat and ball. With ball in hand his accurate seamers have contributed to putting the pressure on the opposition and although he has only taken 6 wickets it has come at a brilliant average of 23.5 and miserly economy rate of 3.91. Malan also averages over 50 with the bat with one hundred to his name. Another 50 or 100 will do his side no harm this Sunday.

  1. Dyllan Matthews

Matthews has been the spin king for the Dragons this season picking up 21 priceless wickets with his golden arm. The leg spinner has an impressive average of 14.14 and has picked up two 5-wicket hauls thus far with a best of 5/27. If Matthews is on form on Sunday the North West might just be in the pound seats.

  1. Brady Barends

The Vaal Reefs seamer has been on the top of his game this season picking up 11 wickets in 9 matches thus far. He has a knack of picking up crucial wickets and he could well be one of the Dragons’ trump cards if he uses the pace and bounce available at the Wanderers to full effect.
