Scintillating hockey skills are on display at the 2018 Varsity Hockey tournament in Johannesburg this past weekend, with eight of the country’s finest men’s hockey sides battling for glory. The NWU made a great start with their 10–4 thumping of Kovsies before losing narrowly to Tuks 3–2 on penalties after the match ended 4–4 in regulation time. Their third match against UJ also did not go the spirited men from Potchefstroom’s way as they lost 3–2 in a tight contest. NWU are currently in fourth place on three points. The stars for NWU thus far have been Wayne Jeffery, Stean Naudé and Essex Mbekeni (head coach of Potch Boys High’s first hockey team.) Killian Ludick (former Potch Gimmies) has also had a good tournament. Maties are leading the table with nine points after a three-game winning streak.

NWU will play Maties today in their forth match at 12:00 today. (The match is currently underway with the NWU leading 3-0 courtesy of two goals from Pierre Botma. The action can be viewed live on SuperSport 10)

This year’s tournament takes place over two weekends with the first four matches taking place at Wits University from 4 to 7 May and the following three taking place at Tuks from 11 to 13 May.
