The South African Army Intelligence Formation Fox Trail made a powerful comeback in its 18th edition on Saturday, 5 September 2026, attracting participants of all ages from the Potchefstroom community.
Among the oldest participants in the 5km walk was 80-year-old Mr Louis Spamer, who has lived in Potchefstroom since 1969. The octogenarian was accompanied by his daughter, 51-year-old Mrs Ronel du Toit, who participated in the 10km race and secured third place. “My father is very active and goes for walks a few times a week,” said du Toit proudly.
The event also attracted enthusiastic young participants, with children as young as five years old taking part in the Fox Trail. Nine-year-old Siphoesihle Kandani was one of the youngest competitors, taking on the challenging 10-kilometre race.
The Grade 3 learner from Promosa Primary School hails from Ikageng Extension 11 and is a member of the Tlokwe Athletics Club. Siphoesihle who comes from a family of runners, said he started running at the age of five, initially competing in 1km races. “One day I want to run professionally and represent South Africa in cross-country events,” he said. The learner was accompanied by his grandmother, 55-year-old Mrs Nomatjala Kandani, who took part in the 5km walk.
The participation of both young and old highlighted one of the enduring strengths of the Fox Trail, its ability to bring together military personnel, families, support staff and members of the public.
The event provided participants with an opportunity to step outdoors, stay physically active and embrace the new season through walking, running, endurance and fitness. The strong turnout also pointed to the potential for an even bigger event next year in 2027.
