The Leopards made it three from three in the Currie Cup First Division this year after a tight 28–21 victory against Eastern Province in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, 8 September. The Leopards needed to keep a cool head in trying conditions with wind and rain making it difficult for the players to adjust. Still, the Leopards made the better start when the fullback, Tapiwa Mafura blitzed through to score the Potchefstroomers first try.
Schalk Hugo converted and, shortly thereafter, Diego Williams scored a try for EP. The Leopards’ Namibian hooker, Louis van der Westhuizen, then gave the Leopards the lead with their second try.
The same pattern followed in the second half when the EP levelled matters through Ntabeni Dukisa. Dean Gordon and Wandile Mazibuko took matters into their own hands when they scored the third and fourth tries for the Leopards.
The fly-half, Schalk Hugo can also be commended for a flawless kicking display against EP. The Leopards coach, Jonathan Mokuena, was pleased with his side’s victory despite difficult conditions. ‘It was an important win against EP and one that we needed, especially after the long trip from Potch to PE. I am happy with the result but we can still improve our performance,’ he said.
The Leopards now have a weekend off before taking on Border at the Fanie du Toit sports grounds on Saturday, 22 September.
‘This will give our players a chance to get some time off and for some of our injured players to heal before our next game,’ he said.
