NWU is NW Premier League club cricket king

The top run-scorer during the season was NWU’s Ruan van Tonder, who hit 398 runs at an average of 56.9. He also hit a high score of 217* and two 50s.

The NWU Cricket team is the 2020/21 Wohnen/Top Paints North West Cricket Club Premier League champion after ending the season with a crushing 243-run win against Ikageng at Senwes Park.

The race for the title came down to NWU and Potch Dorp 1, with one point separating the sides. Although Potch Dorp 1 beat their opponents, Geek Cricket Academy, by seven wickets, it was not enough and the NWU cricket machine convincingly took the title. Ruan Haasbroek top-scored for the NWU with 116 (102) in their total of 326/6 in 50 overs. Ikageng could only manage 73 all out.

AJ Jacobs once again starred for NWU with the ball, picking up 4/22 to end the season with a season high of 19 wickets as the top wicket-taker. Jacobs racked up his wickets at an economy of 2.77, an average of 8.1 and a strike rate of 17.4.

Potch Dorp’s Van Zyl Smit put in a brilliant all-round performance during the season, taking 16 wickets at an economy rate of 2.98, an average of 9.4 and a strike rate of 18.9. He also hit 300 runs at an average of 50 with a high score of 178.

NWU’s Lourén Steenkamp was also a consistent performer, hitting four 50s in a total of 331 runs at an average of 47.3. NWU Colts’ Phemelo Sepati like-wise impressed with the ball, taking 17 wickets at an average of 12.3 and a strike rate of 17.1.
