The NWU first-team cemented their place at the top of the table after a commanding 114-run victory against Potch Dorp 1 in the Wohnen/Top Paints NW Club Cricket Premier League on Saturday, 12 March.
The key to the NWU’s success was the pace bowling prowess of Hardus Coetzer, who was too hot to handle for Potch Dorp’s batsman.
Coetzer took figures of 5/23 in 7.5 overs as Potch Dorp 1 was bowled out for only 73. The NWU scampered to 187/9 in 50 overs on a difficult pitch, with Corné Viljoen hitting a fine 53 (78).
This proved to be more than enough at the NWU Oval, as the NWU’s bowlers took them to victory. NWU Ibbies also claimed a convincing eight-wicket win against Taurus, after the latter was bowled out for 67. Here, spinner Larno Botha (3/0) and Matthew Fourie (3/12) did the most damage.
The former Potch Volkie opener, Waldo Kemp, scored a superb 102 for NWU Colts in a tight encounter against Potch Dorp 2. NWU Colts managed a five-run win at Witrand, after scoring 271/9 in their 50 overs.
Potch Dorp 2’s best bowlers were Kearin George with 3/47 and Xander van Gass with 2/41. The current Volkie batsman, Ludwig Schuld, scored 56 (46) for his club side and Louis du Plessis stroked a beautiful (101 off 132), but it was not enough to take Potch Dorp’s second team to victory.
Colts’ Dirco Bester impressed with tight bowling to end with figures of 2/34.
Travelling Reefs completed an impressive 232-run victory against Impala Precrete, thanks to a superb century from Anton Potgieter. Potgieter hit 139 (109) in an aggressive knock to set his team up with a total of 316/3.
Mthetheleli Poyana (4/27) and Andreas Joubert (3/19) were impressive with the ball in hand and dismissed Impala for only 84.
