Tumelo Motlagale might not have crossed the finish line in first place during the 2022 ASA Marathon Championships in Durban, but still managed to walk away with gold.

This was due to the fact that Zimbabwean runner, Isaac Mpofu, who initially finished first was disqualified due to him not having a license number on his back. According to regulations, participants of the Durban International Marathon had to have two license numbers (one in the front and one at the back).

Motlagale, representing Athletics Central North West during the race, received the gold medal after a superb run and is now the new SA Champion.

Motlagale finished the race in 2:11.14 to set the standard as he keeps one eye on the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA from 15-24 July.
