Local sailplane club shines on the international stage

Oscar Goudriaan was also awarded the prestigious Lewis Lang trophy for the Pilot of the Year, a terrific achievement.

The Potchefstroom-based Akavlieg Potch Gliding Club was once again honoured for an excellent year with numerous junior and senior pilots being awarded Protea colours at the 2022 Aero Club Awards Ceremony at Rand Airport on Saturday, 26 November.

Oscar Goudriaan, Uys Jonker, Attie Jonker, Jason Adriaan and Riaan Denner were awarded senior Protea colours for participating in the 37th FAI World Gliding Championships in Szeged, Hungary, from 23 July to 6 August 2022.

Phillip Jonker, Dick Daly Jnr, Dick Daly Snr and Mike Tiffen (Junior Protea colours) received recognition for their efforts at the 12th Junior World Gliding Championships in Tabor, Czech Republic, from 30 July to 13 August 2022.

Goudriaan was also awarded the prestigious Lewis Lang trophy for the Pilot of the Year, a terrific achievement.

Goudriaan took second place in the Open Class at the World Gliding Championships in Szeged, Hungary, from 23 July to 6 August.

The SA Eagle trophy was also presented to the SA Gliding Team for the Most Meritorious Achievement at an International Event. The SA team, consisting of senior pilots Oscar Goudriaan, Attie and Uys Jonker, Riaan Denner and pilots Nico Le Roux, Dolf Pretorius and team manager Jason Adriaan, were recognised for producing SA’s best-ever finish.
