Dragons take on Western Province in crucial 1-Day Cup clash

The Dragons have a massive opportunity to qualify for the eliminator if they pick up a win today against Western Province at the JB Marks Oval.

The North West Dragons will go all guns blazing in their quest for Cricket SA 1-Day Cup glory when they face off against Western Province at the JB Marks Oval on March 19.

The Dragons are currently fifth on the log on 12 points after picking up an important bonus point with a 134-run win against the Dolphins last week. Western Province is at the bottom of the table on four points.

A win for the Dragons will put them in a good position to qualify for the eliminator, which will be contested by the second and third-placed teams after the group stage is concluded. The Dragons still have to face the Titans in an away match in Centurion on March 22.

The Dragons’ bowlers have been exceptional this season, with seamer Onke Nyaku taking top position as the leading wicket-taker with 13 to his name. Leg-spinner Caleb Seleka is second with 12 wickets under his belt.

The batting form of the left-handers has been key to the Dragons’ success. Captain, Wihan Lubbe has showed glimpses of form with the bat and will look to once again make big runs at the top of order. Ruan de Swardt has also been very consistent with two scores of 40+ in the past two matches. Lesiba Ngoepe is also in good form with an 88 against the Dolphins to his name.

NW Dragons head coach Craig Alexander states that the Dragons look to execute their basics against Western Province.

“Playing at home counts in our favour. We also have momentum on our side after our win against the Dolphins. We need to make sure that we outsmart Western Province with our skills.”

This Day/Night match will start at 13:00 at the JB Marks Oval (Thursday, March 19). Tickets are available online or at the stadium.

Gates already open at 11:00.
