Dangerous hole filled in
The reisdents of Lower Sharonlea finally have their water hole fixed bvut the constructors left the site in a filthy state.
A trench was left by Joburg Water outside Sharonlea resident Jenny-Lee Roussouw’s home for two years, but has since been filled in.
According to Roussouw, Joburg Water had removed a tree, dug a trench about 3m by1.5m in size and then never returned to fix the continually seeping pipe. “They popped in once or twice during an 18 month period. The workers said they would put up tape around the hole, but only came back six months later,” said Roussouw.
She added that the hole was a hazard to residents especially the children who played in the park nearby. “It was an extreme frustration and was a time consuming project for what should have been a really simple task.”
“Joburg water has come back to fill the hole, but they still have not cleaned up the mess their workers left,” she said. “Empty tap boxes were left there along with other rubbish. The fence where they dug has collapsed. An iron rod is sticking out, very dangerously on the park side.”
Roussouw’s husband John said, “Although the hole has been filled, grading and levelling work still needs to be done on the pavement. A team with machinery will be required.”
In reply to the complaint Joburg Water spokesperson Millicent Kabwe said, “We have closed the hole. A team has been sent out to clean out the rubble left by our constructors. We would not want to endanger any residents because of burst water pipes or any other water related matter. Should anyone encounter a problem with Joburg Water, they need to contact us and clear the problem through the right channels.”
