Septic tank turned into recreation centre

It used to be a septic tank but now it is used as a recreational facility.

The area where a septic tank once stood out like a sore thumb has been transformed into a beautiful resting spot.

Benches and stones where Zandspruit residents can sit down and relax were added to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area at the Emthonjeni Community Centre. The project founded by the Northcliff Rotary Club took over a year to complete and Calcamite Sanitary Services (Pty) Ltd repaired the septic tank. On 7 October the surface where the tank had been was covered with gravel.

Rotary member Ansie Hibberd and Emthonjeni partnership developer Estelle Mengel worked very hard to achieve this. “The water fromt he septic tank will flow out next to the sport grounds and residents will have proper ablution facilities. This will contribute towards Emthonjeni’s vision of bringing sustainable change to the community,” explained Mengel.

She also expressed her gratitude towards the club and said the members had become like family. The Rotary District Governor Anneas Balt also paid a visit to the site.

“One of the focus areas of Rotary is water and sanitation. We live in a world where we who come from a privileged background take water for granted. Yet it is one of the most valuable commodities and 80 percent of illness can be connected to safe water. Thank you to Emthonjeni for helping and saving our children,” said Balt.

Hibberd added, eventually a food garden will be created to feed the community.
