Residents of Sharonlea spent the better part of a day cleaning up the park in Sharonlea in Beesvygie Street.
Resident Donne Oosthuizen said the aim was to make the park safer and to make it look more appealing. Oosthuizen said, “We want it to be more open, so we cut the bushes back which will also make it easier to spot criminals hiding in the park.
We all want to feel safe in our homes and we want to become more proactive. This will become a regular event.”
Despite the small turnout the people who participated in the clean-up were enthusiastic and got the job done. Oosthuizen expressed his disappointment that residents had to clean up a park owned by the City of Johannesburg.
City Parks spokesperson Jenny Moodley said City Parks undertook regular clean-up and maintenance initiatives in all of the city’s public open spaces.
“As the custodians of the green environment of Johannesburg, we have made a request for new play equipment for the park,” she said. “We wish to thank residents for being ambassadors for a clean and green environment and appeal to homeowners to continue to care for and improve their environment.”
