Spotlight on mathematics
At a recent mathematics marathon in Windsor 50 primary school pupils learned their times tables within a few hours.
Five schools participated in a mathematics marathon at the Windsor Recreation Centre.
Vision Africa Changers and the Windsor Action Group joined forces with K2U Learning Systems to make this marathon possible.
Ten pupils from five different schools were selected to participate. The schools included Risidale Primary School, Kingsway Christian School, Emmarentia Primary School, Robin Hills Primary School and Randpark Primary School. The aim of the day was to teach the pupils their times tables within a matter of hours and to improve their mathematics skills. K2U presenter Greg Shapiro said, “It is important that pupils practise this afterwards again. Pupils need to know the 12 times tables well”.
Eugene Lubbe from K2U Learning Systems was very involved with the organising of the event. “It was amazing to see the results on the white board of all the group totals for all the schools together at the end of the maths marathon.
“The pupils had loads of fun and the sponsors really spoiled them with different gifts, wonderful prizes and some tasty food, sweets and beverages.”
The Kingsway Christian School were the winners, with a 99 percent group result on the last exercise sheet. Two individual pupils, Shameegah Rajah from Emmarentia Primary School and Lisekho Koli from the Kingsway School, won R250 each. Bishop Ed Bilong of Vision Africa Changers felt very strongly about the initiative. “I believe a nation is good because it has great citizens with great minds, and by enhancing your maths skills, you improve your abilities,” he said.
Lubbe gave special thanks to the marathon’s various sponsors.
