Pavement competition opens

Residents association urges owners to enter verges for pavement competition.

Pick up the spades and turn on the lawnmowers because the Blairgowrie Pavement Competition is around the corner.

The verge competition was launched two years ago with the aim of uplifting the community. Blairgowrie Community Association (BCA) portfolio committee member, Gail Jelley, mentioned that owners of residential and business properties in Blairgowrie and Pine Park can take part in the competition.

“The aim of the competition is for residents to beautify their pavements and uplift the suburb. Suburbs with pavements and verges free of litter and weeds show those with criminal intent that we care about where we live and that we are alert to suspicious activity,” Jelly explained.

She said 40 pavements had entered the 2013 competition so far, and she hopes more owners will take part in this and next year’s competition.

“Winners will walk away with big prizes that range from a R1 000 Colourful Splendour Nursery voucher, to various cash prizes.”

BCA Committee Member Pieter van Zyl said, “Judges will take the following criteria into account: design, economy, maintenance, ecological impact and plant usage. So entrants will have to look at every aspect of their pavement in order to win the competition.”

Jelley concluded that more details were available on the BCA website and that the competition closes on 22 November.
