Nova Pioneer exchanges chapters instead of chocolates on Valentine’s Day

Nova Pioneer Northriding turns the page on the traditional Valentine’s day with a Love to Read Campaign.

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, Nova Pioneer Northriding embraced a unique twist on traditional festivities with their ‘Love to Read’ campaign. Instead of exchanging chocolates and roses, learners were encouraged to bring books and share the gift of reading with their peers. The school’s hallways were filled with a vibrant display of red, white, and pink attire as students eagerly participated in this literary celebration.

The highlight of the event was the Grade R learners taking turns visiting the specially designated reading corner. Here, they settled onto a cosy mat while their teacher read stories. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as the young readers immersed themselves in the world of imagination and storytelling.

The dean of instruction, Prathna Ramchunder, explained how the Love to Read campaign works. ” Today we are celebrating our Love to Read Day instead of the traditional Valentine’s Day. We have asked our students to bring along their favourite books to read with their friends and discuss. They also have an opportunity to read as a class and have a class discussion.”

The school was filled with a vibrant display of red, white, and pink balloons and decorations.

Grade R senior resident teacher, Regomoditswe Makhutle, emphasized the importance of early literacy development for young learners. “Reading with the young children is important because it builds their comprehension skills. “We are trying to make sure students read for understanding and meaning. We have noticed that during guided reading, students focus on decoding words and it’s more than that. It is about understanding the literature and making connections to your own life.”

Instead of exchanging chocolates and roses – learners were encouraged to bring books and share the gift of reading with their peers.

Among the enthusiastic participants was Grade R learner Largo Mokopanele, who shared his love for reading. “I enjoy reading the story about the old lady who swallowed the cat. My favourite book is Paw Patrol because I love dogs.”
