Historic wins and awards for Randburg Cricket Club

Randburg Cricket Club's recent season was packed with victories, growth, and community spirit, proving, once again, why it’s one of Johannesburg’s most loved cricket hubs.

The 2024/2025 cricket season has been another exciting and successful one for Randburg Cricket Club, with many achievements, both on and off the field.

Club chairperson Arnaud Malherbe reflected on the past two years, saying: “Much has happened at the club, and yet, there is still much to do.”

One of the most noticeable changes has been the addition of new floodlights at the facility. “It has been a true game-changer,” said Malherbe. “Our grounds are now one of the most desirable places to play cricket in Johannesburg.”

The club has also upgraded its pitch covers, to help keep the playing surface in excellent condition. The improved facilities, combined with strong partnerships with local restaurants, have turned the club into a welcoming space, not just for cricketers, but also for those looking to enjoy a meal and catch a game.

Behind the scenes, Randburg Cricket Club continues to focus on long-term sustainability. Malherbe said they are working hard to secure the club’s financial future and are actively looking for sponsors who share their vision.

On the field, the club had plenty to celebrate this season. For the first time ever, a Veterans (over 40s) team was introduced into the league. “It has been a resounding success,” Malherbe said, with many players enjoying regular weekly games and helping to grow club membership.

The men’s premier league B team delivered an outstanding season, winning the Black Widow T20, the 50-over competition, and the Time Cricket Competition, earning them a well-deserved promotion to the premier league A division.

Not to be outdone, the women’s premier league A team won both the premier A 35-over competition and the Black Widow T20. Their T20 victory qualified them to represent Central Gauteng in the Cricket South Africa Club Championships. Unfortunately, the national play-offs were rained out, but the team is determined to qualify again next year.

Several Randburg Cricket Club players were honoured at the recent Lions Cricket Awards for their outstanding individual performances, such as: Sunette Viljoen-Louw, who won the Best Provincial 50-over Women’s Batter, Best Women’s Premier League A Batter, and Best Women’s Premier League A Player.

“We are extremely proud of these players,” said Malherbe. “They reflect the excellence we aim for in our top teams.”

Despite all the success at the top level, Malherbe stressed that Randburg Cricket Club remains a family-oriented club, which welcomes players of all ages and skill levels. “Whether you dream of becoming a cricket superstar, or just want a fun game with your mates, Randburg Cricket Club is the place for you.”

The club continues to support the development of its junior players, with hopes that many of them will one day follow in the footsteps of this year’s award-winners.
