Community Heroes hold another successful clean-up

Volunteers from Community Heroes cleaned up the sidewalk along President Fouché Drive, leaving a sparkling, neatly cut sidewalk for all to enjoy.

Community Heroes volunteers gave up their time for another successful clean-up on June 28.

Armed with brooms, plastic bags, and more, they cleaned up along President Fouché Drive, from Kelly Avenue to Kowies Street. Volunteers of all ages came together to clear, beautify, and uplift a stretch of road that had been forgotten for far too long.

They swept the sidewalk and cleared weeds, while others picked up litter, leaving the sidewalk clean, with neatly cut grass.

The community showed up and gave their time, while some businesses in the area offered support. Cars passed by with hoots of encouragement and waves of appreciation.

Resident Charity Muswera joined the clean-up in hopes to put a dent in crime. She explained that she was once robbed on CR Swart Drive by criminals who hid behind an uncut bush. “Because of this grass, the robbers came out of nowhere. I lost my belongings, including my passport, and they cut my hand. When I saw people cleaning, I joined, as this will help more people to be safe. Now, whenever there is a clean-up, I am always there.”

The project, led by Community Heroes made up of residents from Boksruin, Bromhof, and surrounding areas, is about more than just cleaning up; it’s about giving back and recognising the role they play.

Vicka Petrishko, of the group, explained that the most challenging part of their job are some of the people who drive by. “Some are very impatient, with us trying to slow them down. We had some swearing at us and getting upset, but, for the most part, this is a transformation for our neighbourhood. It’s about restoring pride and respect in the area, so that we can all love our environment. We are also taking ownership of the things where service delivery has failed. Instead of complaining, we do something about it.”

She urged more residents to join the clean-ups, or to support the initiative by giving donations to fund the workers that do all the hard work.
