Fools reflects on the year and wishes residents peaceful holidays

Ellenor Woodman, secretary of Fools, confirmed they had a good year, and they are hoping for an even better 2026.

Friends of Olivedale Library (Fools) secretary Ellenor Woodman said the non-profit organisation has had a very good year and wished the community a joyful holiday.

Her highlight for the year was the monthly members’ mornings, which featured engaging speakers. These included talks on life in the Arctic Circle, The Seven Wonders of the World, and a lively sing-along with Gary Marsh.

“Our bookshop has had a new look with the addition of new bookcases, and Roselle, our wonderful librarian, has bought over 300 new books for the library this year with funds raised from the bookshop and three very successful R10 sale days.” She thanked all their industrious volunteers and generous donors.

The library faced challenges, including water shortages that forced closures, vandalism of public toilets, and floods that destroyed many books stored for sale.

Woodman explained that despite these setbacks, every time the bookshop opens, or a R10 sale is held, there is always a story to tell, new people to meet, and fun times to share. She wished the Randburg community a blessed, peaceful, and joyous Christmas.

“Our Christmas wish for Fools is for Johannesburg Library Organisation to re-open our libraries on a Saturday and later on weekdays. This allows parents to introduce their children to books they cannot afford to buy, and provides everyone with access to libraries they may not be able to reach during their working day. This has been going on for far too long, since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. As ratepayers, we are being deprived of something we are paying for.”

She added that they look forward to seeing all their regular members and hope to attract many more in 2026.

“There will always be a smile waiting for you. We wish for our community to have a peaceful, prosperous year.”
