Ward 114 councillor extends festive wishes and reflects on a year of service
Despite service delivery challenges, residents of Ward 114 continued to stand strong councillor Sello Mabelebele shared, along with a Christmas message of hope and renewal.
Ward 114 councillor Sello Mabelebele has extended warm festive season wishes to residents, while reflecting on the milestones, challenges, and achievements of 2025, a year he describes as one of the most meaningful in his public service career.
He highlighted a deeply impactful intervention involving a disabled child who suffered sexual abuse and neglect. “As an organisation that believes in the rule of law, we ensured that a case of child neglect was opened at Cosmo City Police Station. We are pleased that the child was removed from the toxic environment and is now recovering under the care of the department of social development.”
The case, he noted, reaffirmed the importance of protecting the most vulnerable members of society. Mabelebele praised the residents of Ward 114 as the true heroes of the community. He acknowledged their resilience and determination in continuously advocating for quality services. “They never give up the fight for their rights. They engage my office and city entities directly, showing commitment to improving our ward.”
Addressing ongoing challenges, the councillor acknowledged that electricity and water interruptions remained a major concern throughout 2025, particularly in Zandspruit informal settlement and surrounding areas, such as Boundary Road. He emphasised that the long-term solution lies in providing safe, legal electricity and clean water infrastructure to reduce illegal connections and improve safety for all residents.
Among the year’s success stories, Mabelebele cited progress in the fight against crime. He also highlighted the establishment of a labour desk in Zandspruit, which assists unemployed youth with internet access and job applications. “Through this initiative, two young people have already secured employment, while three others have accessed unskilled job opportunities.”
Looking ahead to the festive season, he shared his Christmas wish: To host a Christmas lunch for underprivileged residents in Zandspruit, bringing dignity, hope and joy. “I would like to wish all residents of Ward 114 and Cosmo City a happy Christmas. Please continue to respect the rule of law, reflect on how we can improve our ward, and take time to rest and recharge after a tough year.”
