Blairgowrie dancer represents SA with pride at IDO World Hip Hop & Popping Championships in Slovenia

Young dancer Kiyaan Naidoo showcased discipline and skill at the IDO World Championships, holding his own against international competitors and securing a strong global ranking for South Africa.

Young Blairgowrie dancer Kiyaan Dean Naidoo has returned from the International Dance Organisation (IDO) World Hip Hop & Popping Championships in Slovenia with a result that reflects months of discipline and growth.

Competing in the hip-hop solo junior 2 category, he finished 23rd in the world, a strong achievement in a field of 68 skilled dancers from across the globe.

Naidoo earned his place on the national team through SABOD’s provincial and national qualifiers, first receiving his provincial colours, and later his South African colours at the final selection round in August. He described the opportunity to represent South Africa as an honour filled with excitement and pressure.

To prepare, Naidoo trained for three hours each day, under the guidance of his coach Thamsanqa Kagiso Manzana, who designed a detailed programme focused on technique and performance quality.

Naidoo also prepared mentally by studying past competitions, watching videos, and building confidence for the international stage.

Manzana praised his dedication, saying Naidoo trained with maturity and consistency. “His calmness during the competition stood out. He handled the pressure well and executed exactly as we prepared. His ranking reflects his potential and professionalism.”

This was Naidoo’s second international competition, having first represented South Africa in Croatia in 2019. He said the atmosphere in Slovenia was electric, intense, and inspiring. Meeting dancers from various countries broadened his perspective and motivated him to continue growing.

Naidoo said he will always remember exploring Slovenia with his teammates, Jayden Luyt and Luki Malinga, experiencing new food and culture, and performing on the world stage.

Despite the busy travel schedule, he still managed to write four school exams while abroad.

As he looks to the 2026 season, Naidoo aims to refine his technique, grow creatively, and return stronger. He thanked his coach, parents, and mother, his ‘second coach’, for their support.

He also encouraged young dancers to stay disciplined, train hard, and believe in their journey.
