Group of 10 to 20 thugs target business in Aureus: Staff held at gunpoint

An armed robbery on Chevrolet Street, Aureus last week saw between 15 and 20 perpetrators entering the business and holding up all staff at gunpoint.

It was a relatively busy first week of August for Mapogo A Mathamaga Security’s client base in Randfontein.

Operations manager at Mapogo, Ben Willemse said five incidents were reported for the period between Monday, August 1 and Sunday, August 7.

A breakdown of the incidents:

• Tuesday, August 2 at 08:35 – Housebreaking and theft on Merwe Road, Elandsvlei: Perpetrators gained access onto the premises, forced open the front door and stole several items from the house before fleeing the scene.

• Tuesday, August 2 at 16:14 – Armed robbery on Chevrolet Street, Aureus: Between 15 to 20 perpetrators entered the business at approximately 13:00. They held all staff at gunpoint and locked them in an office where they were unable to give the alarm whilst the perpetrators loaded items onto their own trucks. The thugs hit a second business at the same time and robbed a security officer of his firearm. The staff was only able to give the alarm when they managed to free themselves at 16:14.

• Tuesday, August 2 at 21:40 – Malicious damage to property at Umpakathi Mall, Randfontein: A client entered the shop and demanded his money back. In the process he broke windows and a cash register, and left the scene.

• Saturday, August 6 at 07:28 – Housebreaking and theft on Van Riebeeck Road, Homelake: Perpetrators entered the premises through the side gate, broke into a business and stole several items. They attempted to break into a second business but failed and fled the scene.

• Saturday, August 6 at 21:46 – Malicious damage to property on Lourie Street, Greenhills: Driver under the influence drove into the client’s wall and damaged it.
