Road infrastructure: Opposition party demands municipality to intervene

The municipality's road maintenance has become a concern for ActionSA as they give their set of demands to the municipality.

ActionSA recently voiced its concern regarding the state of Rand West City’s road infrastructure and called for decisive action.

According to a statement issued by ActionSA Rand West Region secretary Dauw Steyn, the party was left appalled by the condition of the roads after taking a tour from Randfontein to Westonaria.

He further stated they see no efforts being made to address the potholes and roads that have now become gravel roads due to lack of upkeep. He also mentioned this causes traffic congestion and an increase in road accidents.

In Hillside and Wheatlands, where the new Mega City Project’s infrastructure was developed, none of those roads have been reinstated and was left to deteriorate.

“The municipality’s failure to maintain and upgrade its infrastructure has resulted in roads that are not only impassable but also pose a significant risk to the safety of the residents. The provincial government has not provided any leadership or direction either,” Dauw expressed.

“The current state of the roads is unacceptable, and we demands immediate attention.”

He demanded that the Rand West City Local Municipality immediately:

• Urgent assessment of the current state of the roads and prioritise areas for repair
• Develop a plan to upgrade and maintain infrastructure with a clear timeline and budget
• Provides regular updates to the community regarding the progress of maintenance

The municipality has been contacted for comment on March 4 whereafter no reply has been given as of yet. If comment is given, a thorough update will follow.
