Potholes, trucks and traffic — North Way Road needs urgent fixing
Residents, business owners and taxpayers are concerned about the dangers that North Way Road brings if it is not fixed.
Frans le Grange is among many residents, taxpayers and business owners expressing their frustration with the condition of North Way Road.
According to Le Grange, he has sent various complaints to Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) about the potholes, heavy-weighing trucks and water damage affecting the road.

“Not only is this a high-traffic zone, but there is a preschool and a high school on the road. The potholes are causing more traffic and becoming a danger to drivers trying to swerve out. The trucks driving on this route are only causing potholes to become bigger. The heavyweight is ruining the tar. Randfontein has seven entryways that I know of and not one of them has a weighing bridge for the trucks. So we do not even know if the trucks are the right weight for our local roads,” he expressed.
He added when it rains, the sidewalks are flooded.

Le Grange attended all of the Ward 9 meetings where he also personally handed over printed complaints to the RWCLM Executive Mayor. Of these complaints, North Way Road has been the priority for residents.

“I have never gotten a response. I have been investing in this town since 1988 and during that time, the town was still functioning properly. Now one of the biggest problems is this road. My solution is to completely scrape the road and repave it because filling the potholes only temporarily fixes them until the next rain comes or the trucks use the road. The potholes have been fixed so many times already,” he said.
Municipal spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa has since commented on the matter.
“The municipality is poised to commence repairs on the road very soon. If everything goes according to plan, we will initiate the work next week. The issue on this road will soon be a thing of the past,” he stated.
