Life Robinson raises kidney failure awareness

Life Robinson Private Hospital together with Ampath hosted an opportunity where the community could test for kidney failure.

Life Robinson Private Hospital hosted a Know Your Numbers event on March 14 in celebration of World Kidney Day.

Unit Manager Julian Khazamula stated the event was held to raise awareness about the main causes of kidney failure. Therefore, Julian and his staff organised a station where community members could test their blood pressure and blood sugar.

“Kidney failure can progress over several years. When it is still early stages, kidney failure can be mistaken as nothing serious. However, after it has progressed to a greater stage, many times it is irreversible. Therefore, today we provide these tests for free as a way to help community members prevent kidney failure,” he said.

Alta Tsolo (auxillary nurse) takes Mike Madulube’s (registered nurse) blood pressure.

He continued by explaining kidneys can appear healthy for up to seven years before patients realise they have kidney failure.

According to Julian, symptoms of kidney failure include:

• Loss of appetite
• Swelling of the face
• Weight loss
• Heart failure
• Uremic fetor (urine-like odour on the breath)

He added kidney failure can be prevented by following a healthy diet, participating in exercises and regular doctor visits.

Julian invited Ampath to partake in the event where they also provided the blood tests. Ampath marketer Annie Nikola expressed that the event was not only held for renal patients (end-stage kidney disease) but for community members who have not yet been tested.

“Make use of these open days. Attend the free testing opportunities because it is better to prevent than to treat,” Nikola said.

Marketer of Life Robinson, Melanie van Staden concluded there were 129 screenings done on the day.
