Avoid disasters: Fire chief warns of common fire risks
Since August, the Randfontein Herald has reported at least four house fires, prompting Rand West Fire Chief Benny Mohlabeng to share key fire prevention tips and emergency contact numbers.
As the summer approached and the risk of fires became greater, Rand West Fire Chief Benny Mohlabeng gave some advice on preventative measures and emergency solutions.
There can be many causes for a devastating fire, and according to Mohlabeng, this can include power outages, especially when appliances are left on or plugged in. He added, when there is no one to see the fire start, it is more likely that neighbours might take notice of it when it is already at an advanced stage.

More fire risks include:
• unattended heaters that are left on
• unattended candles and primus stoves
• improperly closed gas leaks

He explained these are the most common challenges linked to house fires, as well as factory, informal buildings and business fires.
“If the community can properly isolate all these challenges, it should be risk-free at all times. We urge to community to ensure that all appliances are attended to when in use and children are not left unattended since they are likely to experiment and participate in risky behaviour,” he noted.

Furthermore, Mohlabeng stated that Disaster Management always attends to displaced families when necessary.
“They provide temporary shelters, food when available and also blankets. Additionally, the local municipality offers assistance and, in some cases, temporary shelters until community members get proper accommodation.”
