According to educator Tracy-Leigh van Wyk, the educational excursion not only deepened the learners’ understanding of South Africa’s complex history but also instilled in them a sense of responsibility towards creating a better future.
She further stated one of the most poignant moments from the visit was encapsulated in a powerful quote from Wilmarie Deetlefs, “South Africa needs a clean slate; I think that’s our generation. We are the clean slate.”
These words resonated deeply with the learners, emphasising the significance of their generation in shaping the country’s future,” Tracy-Leigh said.
Through this experience, the club gained invaluable insights into the importance of human rights, equality, and social justice. As they navigated the museum’s exhibits, they were confronted with the harsh realities of apartheid but also witnessed the resilience and courage of those who fought against it.
“This excursion served as a significant reminder of the progress made towards reconciliation and the ongoing quest for a more equitable society. As the learners reflected on their experience, it became clear that they had not only learned about history but had also been inspired to become active participants in creating a brighter future for all South Africans,” she concluded.
