Football club visited by soccer star

'We've got a history to tell with this team'

A Mohlakeng man turned professional footballer has returned to his roots to share his knowledge.

Last Monday (27 June) Makhehleni Makhaula, who plays for the Free State Stars Football Club, dropped in on the Trabzon Football Club’s first practice of the season at the Greenhills Stadium, in an effort to give back to the community. Makhehleni shared his knowledge with the club and taught them the ways of the ball.

Makhehleni, who is 26, grew up in Mohlakeng and joined the Trabzon FC at the age of 21 while working part-time. As a breadwinner from a difficult background, he wanted to convey a very simple message: hard work is everything. It doesn’t matter what your circumstances are, what matters is that you follow your dreams, no matter what.

“Come to training, be focused and work hard. Soccer requires hard work,” he said.

Sipho Khuse, a former professional football player and founder of the Trabzon FC is focused on getting the youth off the streets and onto the field. “It’s all about changing lives, as they come from poor areas around the West Rand,” Sipho said.

His aim for the future of the club is to establish an official academy from which members can further their careers in football. The club can be described as an outstanding stepping-stone, because numerous professional football players have evolved out of it.

Sipho is determined to take this team, with its manager, Evans Pitikoe, coach Tshepo Pooe and potential sponsor Stubbs Butchery all the way to provincial level.

After 13 years of existence, the Trabzon Football Club just keeps growing bigger and stronger.
