Dane bags bronze as six Golden Score judokas take on the world

Six judokas from the Golden Score Judo Club recently competed on the international stage at the African Open Cup, facing opponents from countries as far afield as New Zealand and Cameroon.

Six talented judokas from Golden Score Judo Club proudly represented South Africa at the prestigious African Open Cup, which was held at the University of Pretoria.

This was the first time the African Championships were hosted on home soil, and South Africa earned the honour of hosting the tournament for the next three years. Athletes from countries such as Great Britain, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, New Zealand, Belgium, Mozambique, Zambia, Cameroon, Kenya, Uruguay, and Botswana participated.

Brandwill Kortjie (seond place, RSA), Hajaina Randrianaivo (second place, Madagascar) and Dane van Heerden (third place, RSA).

Local judokas Dane Van Heerden, Victor Valentine, Melicia Venter, Keanan Venter, Carien Du Plessis and Madison Lombaard memorably represented South Africa, going head-on against international contenders.

The club expressed their pride as Dane van Heerden brought home a bronze medal in the 50kg male category.

“While not all athletes walked away with medals, their courage, growth and unwavering effort made a lasting impression. Golden Score Judo Club is immensely proud of each judoka for representing their club and country with honour and resilience. We are incredibly proud of all our athletes. Each one of them fought with heart, and they have made us proud. Golden Score continues to nurture local talent and is honoured to be part of this exciting chapter in South African judo history,” said spokesperson Simone Swarts.
