West Rand community joins forces to support Muscular Dystrophy

The Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of South Africa hosted its first-ever community run in the West Rand, raising both funds and awareness for a powerful cause.

The Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of South Africa (MDFSA) recently brought runners together at the West Rand School to support those affected by the disease.

MDFSA’s general manager for the Gauteng branch, Robert Scott, said they organised this run on August 2 to raise awareness about muscular dystrophy and to unite the community in support of those impacted. It also served as a fundraising event to help fund their support services for individuals and families living with this condition.

“This was their first time hosting this event, which now forms part of their annual fundraising and awareness calendar,” Scott said.

He added there were about 12 participants, called the ‘muscle runners’ team, who completed as many laps as possible on the school’s closed-off internal road, which measures 800 metres per lap.

“Together, we covered a total distance of 108km as a team for the day. Participants could run or walk at their own pace. Sponsors and donors were then able to make donations in support of their efforts or individual targets for the day,” he explained.

The highlight of the day for him was seeing participants of all ages and abilities cross the finish line with smiles, knowing they were running for a meaningful cause.

“The energy, camaraderie and shared sense of purpose were truly inspiring. We will host it again and look forward to making it even bigger and better next year. We are deeply grateful to West Rand School for their hospitality, to our volunteers and sponsors for making the day possible, and to every participant who laced up their shoes to run for those who can’t. Together, we are helping to keep hope and awareness alive. If anyone would like to join the team, they can contact me on 011 472 9824 or email me at mdfgauteng@mdsa.org.za,” he concluded.
